I really enjoyed working at my own pace, spending more time here, going back and re-reading information, sharing comments with fellow travelers.

I think my very favorite discoveries were Rollyo and Nings, they could be very useful for both teachers and our young students. As far as my lifelong learning goals I found lots of new ways to access and filter new information and strategies. I'm not really sure which of the myriad techniques will stay active in my work, time will tell, but I have acquired a taste for searching out new things. That's probably the biggest plus of participating in the 23 Things project. I really loved discovering Library Thing and Delicious, and the organizational tools offered by tags and labels. Those were big take aways.

The project is extremely well organized, and I don't have many suggestions about it... perhaps to check all the links periodically, and have Mac OS platforms available for everything. I know several of us in Dallas had problems with Podcasts and Videocasts, but we will be working on those together this fall. I would definitely participate in a future exploration, especially one so expertly designed as this.

It's hard to think of one word to describe my learning experience, but I would say "delightful" fits pretty well! Plus it was delightful to have my cohorts for support and suggestions; we had a pretty outstanding team of learners and explorers!

Thanks to my "homies" at Spring Branch ISD! Elizabeth Bayer's idea about a support system for new, and older, teachers is a great idea. I looked over the Ning in Education site. It's pretty impressive; I loved the interactions, problem solving, and idea sharing that was going on. Didn't find but a little bit about music; maybe a little more exploration into my TMEA colleagues will yield a music education Ning community.

Honestly, I have never been interested in the Facebook world! I have a page, to which many post, but rarely post on it myself. I can sit with someone and talk for hours about anything and everything, but the even light of the computer screen leaves me cold and eventually impatient. Is this generational? I think to some degree, yes. (Have to confess Twitter misses me entirely!) But I know this is a dominant method of social interaction in the technologically-up world...there is a huge divide there, but that's another subject. One of the best parts of 23 Things is learning what a wide world of techniques and strategies are out there being used effectively. Maybe this old dog...

In the article 7 things you should know about Nings there was a good suggestion about institutions using Nings as a way to maintain contact with constituent groups; I immediately thought about our Alums.

Thing #21 Oh, oh! It just moved a little fast for these eyes, kind of a strobe effect!

I have used YouTube and TeacherTube a lot, especially in special projects like our All School Program. I had a blast exploring a radio site called Last.fm. It's possible to explore any genre, artist, or, in my case, composer or conductor and immediately hear a piece of music. Yes, it is a little random in its choices, but I didn't hear one selection that was a dud!

I know so many teachers that come to me looking for some music to accompany a classroom exploration or activity (like journaling)...Last.fm is the perfect spot to custom design this kind of "background" atmosphere. A lot of us spend time trying to control the aural environment; the right music at the proper volume can be a really positive experience in the classroom, lunchroom, reading room, writing room, etc., etc.

Of course this Thing isn't just confined to music...just look at all the categories in the Web 2.o Awards: real estate, travel, philanthropy, more and more. SEOmoz, the host, has an amazing variety of Tools to use, some free, some pro, and an ongoing blog to peruse. I've bookmarked the Awards page as I know I'll be back to check out more of the categories and the winners!

Thing # 18 Office to Go

I had some trouble getting into Open Office; I think my home OS is a little outdated (I'm running OS 10.3.9). When I get to school next week I will try this again on the G5 and see if I can do better. Look for an additional post here.

I have explored Google Docs and find it just as easy to use as Microsoft Office (and somewhat cheaper!!). It even asked if I wanted to use the fonts already installed; yes, I said. Patricia pointed out to Anne in a comment that collaboration on documents is so easy with online suites like this one. That and the money are probably the biggest advantages. I did notice that a "Word" document was converted to a PDF for printing; don't know if that's an advantage or disadvantage, just another step.

BTW, finally got around to adding a bloglist...it's at the bottom. Also, I discovered a nice exploration being done by a teacher in the Alief School District. You might check it out. http://23thingsilearnedduringthe09summer.blogspot.com/

Thing #17 limiting search options

The video by Mr. Goodner was terrific! I found myself taking notes as everything was so organized and linear. Afterwards it was easy to follow my notes and create a simple Rollyo search area on instruments of the orchestra called Instrument Exploration. Here's the link http://rollyo.com/...just choose Instrument Exploration, type in an orchestral instrument (like bassoon) and it goes to the Philharmonia Orchestra's two sites where info on the instrument is available (including videos on how it is played).

As explained so well, this tool is a great way to create some research limits for students. The teacher selects the sites for exploration, and the students can easily explore the sites for learning. This is a really intuitive and easy tool for teachers. It's one of the highlights I'll be showing my grade level team this fall.

Thing #16 How can we use wikis?

My friend and technology mentor, Patricia, tuned me on to wikis last year. They are a very neat way to do many things, including collaborative editing of a text, organizing a list of information, conference planning, etc. Wiki means "quick" in Hawaiian. So a wiki is a collaborative website that allows you to quickly gather and edit information. They have tracking tools and also retain earlier versions of the collaboration in case editing creates errors.

I added a comment to SBISD's sandbox; looks like lots of participants really appreciate what they are learning through this process.

One way I though we could use a wiki is for teachers to work on the process and ideas for the All-School Program. We wouldn't necessarily have to be in a meeting for this to work. Because we work with young children teachers could also "lead" students (at the Mimio board) using a wiki to organize or web ideas, and KWL explorations. I think the potential is infinite and really practical.

Thing #15, not just for Librarians

Designed for Librarians, this Thing provides some thoughtful messages about working with emerging technologies. One of the writers, Michael Stephens, notes that the Librarian 2.0 is a trendspotter; he made me think of and be thankful for our own Patricia and the enthusiasm with which she embraces and promotes new technologies and strategies for all LL teachers and students using the library. I think we're lucky to have her, and Anne, around!

As to Libraries, Rick Anderson notes some dangerous "Icebergs" floating around: a "just in case" collection, or the idea of collections at all; reliance on "user education"...there aren't enough librarians to educate all the potential users; and the "come to us" model of library service now that we're in the "post-print" era.

The aforementioned Michael Stephens also notes that Librarians 2.0 plans for their users, always asking what new technologies and materials are really needed, but warning against a thoughtless "technolust."

Chip Nilges and John Riemer advocate ways for making information accessible using Web 2.0 strategies such as tagging and relevance ranking (such as through keyword prevalence).

What this Thing most made me wonder is how much organized thought is really going on in teacherland. Maybe a lot, I just don't know. However I think we are learning quite a bit by the leadership of these Librarians and particularly this project.

Thing #14, a few roadblocks

I spent quite a bit of time exploring Technorati on my own. In short it's a major depot of millions of blogs that you can explore through keywords and tags. Some notes, though:

The site has changed big time since the informational video was created (2006, I think). Doesn't look or function the same. The exercise on searching via blogposts, tags, and blog directory isn't the same as in the video...you can't make a specific choice, just search by keywords.

The blogpost on Tags opened to the second page of the text...click on "1" at the top of the page to read this article correctly (I didn't, though it really didn't change anything).

I'm not really sure how the huge expanse of Technorati could help me specifically, although I did join and, at least, tried to "claim my blog" so that it would be registered with them. I do like organizing materials with tags, and am learning what the most popular, and therefore effective, tags are being used for subjects that interest me.

Hope you enjoy Technorati, but it's really an independent study!

P.S. my claim went through, and I'm on Technorati...even found out my "rank" (whatever that is): 3, 184, 338. Wow!

Technorati

sk3wv4z5pi

Thing #13, it's Delicious!

Another big exploration here. I followed the links systematically, but found some of them not working, like the link to the Common Craft tutorial on podcasting and the Ma.gnolia tutorial and website (it's down for the summer).

Delicious is a place for building a shared reading list with collaborators. Reading list doesn't just mean books or articles, instead it's a collection of url's that you can organize by adding tags. It was easy to create a user account. When you want to add a url to your Delicious list you simply click on "post to Delicious". Interestingly, Delicious becomes a heading in your Firefox list. If you simply click on "add Bookmark" in Firefox, it now asks if you want to also add it to your Delicious account...pretty cool shortcut! If you want to create a Network to share your list with others they must also have user accounts; you just type their username(s) into the spot marked ADD on the Network page.

Digg is the largest Social Bookmarking site with almost 400 million links and 33 million monthly visitors (wow!). It is "a place to discover and share content on the web." People, not editors, determine the value of the content that is shared on this site. There are news items, videos, etc. to explore...go and see what's the latest buzz.

Furl is a place to save web content in and online archive. It allows you to organize the content by creating topics, keywords, and comments, which makes searching later very easy. Like Digg, Furl also provides a list of hot or popular topics. One thing you can easily do with Furl is save and send links to colleagues via email or immediately add the link to your RSS feed.

The Top 30 (actually 20!) Social Bookmarking Sites is just that. Digg, Delicious, and Technorati appear there, but you will also find Yahoo! Buzz, Kaboodle (a (mostly) women's SHOPPING site that seems really popular), and Newsvine, a nice site for newsjunkies like me. If you really want to go on a disorganized ride dip into Reddit for a few hours...your family won't see you for days.

One of the ways teachers could use Social Bookmarking sites like Delicious would be to create a specific tag, like "pioneers," and have everyone in the Network look for and find url's on the topic. Everybody's work easily becomes accessible for the whole team to share.

John Mayer and Human Nature

Take a moment and listen to the poetry in this performance. I visited all the sites as suggested by Library to play and made a few images through online applications. The first picture reflects my emotions right now! It was created at
http://www.txt2pic.com/toons/62.htm which is part of comic strip generator. Just a little overwhelmed!

The barcode picture was created at the "custom sign generator" site, at the graphics with text spot #43. Here's the address: http://www.customsigngenerator.com/ I had a little trouble saving the image; it appeared as an .aspx file, which Mac needed a way to open. I did find that in my applications folder there was a Graphic Converter application and tried that. Voila! It worked, saving it to my desktop; I then even saved it as a .jpg to my desktop (something I find more familiar).

The third image is kind of neat...I made a gallery setting of my friend Lynn's photo. Very cool! Here's the address to get you started there: http://www.dumpr.net/museumr.php

All in all a nice break from all the reading in some of the previous Things!

Thing #9

I found this exploration a little overwhelming and confusing. There was SO MUCH to look at and read through I had to stop after a couple of hours and take a break. But don't let this discourage you from wading around in this newsreaders and newsfeeds pool!

I set up a Bloglines reader and was able to subscribe to feeds that interest me, like food, classical music, art, technology, etc. Since starting the 23 Things I have subscribed to many new sites; I don't know how many I will continue to use...time will tell. But being subscribed to this one reader will cut down on surfing time, for sure, so I think it is really worth it. Bloglines search tool was the easiest for me to use. There does seem to be a problem with registering, though. A notice from Bloglines tells me to respond to an email to confirm my account. No email. It then asks me if I want to have the email resent to me...yes, I clicked. No email. Wonder what all this means?

One of the other sites I subscribed to was Topix.net, where I get a newsfeed about the latest Dallas news, weather, info, etc. It may be a little too detailed for my interest.

I didn't really find any of the search tools to be that confusing. I did think Technorati was way too comprehensive for my use, although for SOME reason, the video in Thing #8 that I was unable to see yesterday ran perfectly on the site this time. Who knows why!

Atomic Learning has a wealth of video tutorials on many subjects, some free, some not. It describes itself as a "web based software training" site. I must say it did have hundreds of tutorials on music topics that I will be exploring, things like Garage Band techniques and iTunes. Really vast.

I think my favorite newsfeed that I subscribed to is the New York Times classical music feed. There were all kinds of articles that interested me. Also I signed up for a number of feeds about food...nothing like a good recipe for sole!

Here's something else I'm learning: the 23 Things isn't just 23 Things!

Thing #8b

Okay, my brain must be slowing down. The obvious great thing about it is that I have a spot (ONE spot) where I can get the latest feeds from my fellow 23 Things bloggers without having to go to my Firefox Bookmarks for each one separately. A real time saver. (I can also get the latest on the Texas Rangers!).

As a teacher, I keep lots of interesting, interactive music websites for class in my bookmarks. I could now create one spot that would organize and allow quick access to these sites. Students could even use the spot as the feeds are pre-screened and selected by me.

I'm going to try to make my reader list public, so more about that later!

BTW, I was not able to view the movie on RSS. When I clicked on the spot, a screen came up asking me to download Flash Player. Spent about 30 minutes trying to do this, but, just like the Google Earth problem, it wouldn't download properly, so I could not install the Flash Player plugin required to see the movie! Double Rats!

Thing #7

I do use Google a lot, mostly as a search engine, but found out so much more through this Thing. I set up a Google Calendar for myself. This app is much like our Meeting Maker, and I suppose it would be a good personal tool for someone with a complicated schedule. Fact is, my life is not that complicated! But I suppose it could be used as a diary to show how I spent my time, what I thought about something, etc. I could also use it to create lesson plans...which I spend tons of time tweaking and printing out (I never consider any lesson set in concrete...they have to be flexible, thoughtful, well-timed, and especially evaluated after the fact). The Google Calendar would make it possible to create and edit lessons online.

I also set up an iGoogle page for myself, customized to bring news of sports, music, politics, art, food, weather, and YouTube. My usual pattern is to go online and immediately go to Yahoo News, which has most of this stuff on the news page. I admit I'm a news junky; I have to check into the NY Times, CNN, and the Huffington Post every day.

Now one item was frustrating in this Thing. I really wanted to gain access to Google Earth. I tried to download the app to my desktop, but the dmg icon was "corrupt" and, ergo, I couldn't mount the application. Does anyone have experience with this? Did I do something incorrect in the downloading? Thanks for any help!!

P.S. The jigsaw puzzle of my friend's photo arrived. I haven't seen it but he says it looks great, so thanks for a good product, Big Huge Labs! I'd never heard the term "mashup" but now know it is the name given to something I've been experiencing for years. The Flickr Color Picker was ingeniously playful. As its creator said, "Its purpose is simply to provide wonder and delight. Nothing more, nothing less. Isn't that enough?" A noble purpose for anything! Here's the spot: http://www.krazydad.com/colrpickr/

Another site of wonder and delight by the same creator, Jim Bumgardner, came from a hypnotizing music and art mashup, which can only be appreciated by going to its site called Whitney Music Box, http://www.coverpop.com/whitney/ A bit psychedelic for some, I suppose, I spent about an hour watching/listening to the patterns of color and sound.

A little more concrete, at Big Huge Labs I was able to take the above photo by my friend Lynn and turn it into a (OMG) jigsaw puzzle. It did cost $30, but the future torture will be well worth the cost (I gave it to him!).

Clearly, I could have spent an entire summer following the threads of Thing 6.

Thing #5

It took quite a while to explore the site Flickr! There are millions, literally, of images that are accessible to download, edit, use as raw materials for new work, etc., and several different kinds of "copyright" rules that need to be followed. I think the resource is an especially good one for our kind of school, as so many of our young ones are visual learners, and teachers could find connections to every curricular area in support of child-centered learning. I'm thinking I would like to post my pix from my Normandy, France adventure...who knows how they could help some study of WWII? There is also a way to tag the photos and geolocate the photos to make searching feasible. Pretty ingenious idea, and you can see how much discussion and feedback photos generate! I've included a photo from the music area of the Flickr Creative Commons site. It was taken by a contributor named Zen. One thing I didn't quite understand was how to completely attribute the photo to its creator.

Things in general

Just registered my blog with Vaughn Branom at Spring Branch ISD. It was fun to read the Library 2 Play blog. It was also nice to discover that it was created in the Spring Branch (Houston) School District. My brother, sister, and I are all products of this great district. As a matter of fact, I am a "true" Spring Brancher...I attended Spring Branch Elementary, Spring Branch Junior High, and Spring Branch High School. There actually aren't many of us, as this district has many, many schools.

When I looked at the pointers for Lifelong Learners I discovered that the link to the "learning contract" did not work. There was about a two hour time lag from the time I created the slide show and added a video until it was posted. I also learned how to add my slide show to my blog...it's right above this post.

Hey! I just learned how to add a link to my new blog! It does seem that a lot of the instructions are tailored for Windows users...where is the Mac help?!

Thanks to PV I was able to add an avatar to my blog. This was a medium-easy task requiring quite a few choices and following some precise instructions from Yahoo! I am interested in The 23 Things and hope to be exploring and enjoying new tech-techniques this year. By the way, I also have a really good warm pasta dish that uses no tomato or cream sauces. It's serious food.

Hey, anyone! I found and used a site called Slide to create a slide show from jpgs.
